On Library Sunday on March 19, 2023, the exhibition "Belastetes Erbe. Provenance Research on Nazi Looted Property in Libraries in Saxony-Anhalt" will be ceremoniously opened at the Magdeburg City Library. It allows insights into the work and results of provenance research in Saxony-Anhalt on all floors. The exhibition will be on display until the end of November 2023.
In addition to works of art, books are also among the cultural assets that were looted from Jewish citizens in Germany during the National Socialist regime. Profiteers were private individuals as well as institutions. And even today, such cultural assets can be found in the stacks of German libraries. With this exhibition, the Magdeburg City Library makes this particular aspect of the disenfranchisement and persecution of Jewish citizens visible.
This was preceded by a multi-year scientific research project of the Saxony-Anhalt branch of the German Library Association, which was supported by the German Center for the Loss of Cultural Property and the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The detailed presentation with historical books, photos and documents was developed by the researchers involved in the project, Elena Schott and Lara Mämecke, together with Dr. Monika J. Gibas as scientific director.
The show also focuses on the fates of the persecuted and murdered Jewish Magdeburgers, whose traces can be found in the books of today's Historical Collection.
The exhibition is also a contribution to the Magdeburg Year of Remembrance 2023.
