Using human rights as an opportunity

The project focuses on the intensive engagement of young people with history(s) and the work of human rights defenders in the local area. Using theater pedagogical and artistic methods, a discussion about historical events, human rights and civil courage in selected rural areas in Saxony-Anhalt is to be stimulated and sustainable food for thought is to be given.

The results of the project work will be publicly presented in an artistic product - e.g. in the form of a play, an exhibition or a "civil courage guide" - and will find their way into workshop materials, which will be available for further educational use.

Methodically diverse

In the project, methods that are attractive to the real world are combined with historical education and human rights education. Through practical, real-life tasks and exercises, the young people are encouraged to perceive and exercise their own role in a democratic society - and to critically reflect on experiences of injustice, human rights violations and history(s).

In this way, the necessary theoretical examination is linked with practical activity and, for example, photo expeditions, interviews with relatives and neighbors enable an examination on different levels. Together with the young people, we want to go in search of history and stories that are told "behind closed doors". On the one hand, because these stories may not be considered important, on the other hand, we want to address the "unspoken" things and events that are often kept quiet. But these story(s) offer a lot: a good opportunity to make everyday history(s) from "back then" tangible and tangible, but not to lose sight of the current reference.

GESCHICHTE(N) WÜRDE(N) LEBEN - Zivilcourage und Menschenrechte in Sachsen-Anhalt is a one-year project within the framework of the funding program for human rights education through historical learning - Menschen Rechte Bilden - of the Foundation Remembrance Responsibility Future.
