MAGIDA, the Magdeburg offshoot of the "Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the Occident".

Monday after Monday, the number of participants in the demonstrations of the self-proclaimed "Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the Occident" (PEGIDA) in Dresden has increased. PEGIDA offshoots have also been taking to the streets in other cities for weeks. Since November 2014, an offshoot of PEGIDA has also been speaking out in Magdeburg under the name MAGIDA - "Magdeburger gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes" ("Magdeburgers against the Islamization of the Occident"). On January 19 and 26 of this year, their first rallies took place with 600 and 800 participants, respectively. Further developments are not yet foreseeable. However, it is already clear that the issues and demands articulated here on the streets will, in the longer term, pose major challenges to the debates on shaping a democratic and human rights-oriented culture. With this impulse from a current occasion, we and the Alliance Against Right Magdeburg go into the background of the MAGIDA actors and their demands.
